What does A&E’s suspension of Phil Robertson really mean?
This morning when I visited my Facebook news feed, I was confronted with a lot of beards. They were everywhere. My friends are very upset about the fact that A&E has suspended Phil Robertson because of his remarks about homosexuality. I’m not surprised by A&E’s move but I am surprised by the thought process behind all of it. Now let me back up for a minute. Another news story in my Facebook feed this morning was about Barbara Walters and her most fascinating person of the year. In case you didn’t know, she chose Hillary Clinton. This stunned me. What has Hillary done in 2013 to make her more fascinating?…

God’s doing a new thing and He doesn’t want you to miss it!
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. – Isaiah 43:19 I’m not a theologian by any stretch of the imagination. I love God’s word. As a writer and a book reviewer, it’s not surprising that I love words. The Bible is rife with gorgeous stories and word pictures. If you haven’t read it, even if you aren’t a Christian, you should give it a try. The Psalms, the prophets, the history…it’s amazing. But sharing this love of God’s word with my kids hasn’t always been as easy as…

Tanzania Rohrs
Sometimes, in the course of your life, God opens the door to a friendship that touches your soul in ways you’d never imagined. About a year ago, my family and I attended the first birthday party of an adorable little boy that we all love. At that party, we met another family with which we instantly connected. Though we live in the same city and we share the same likes (Doctor Who anyone?) the Rohrs family and mine don’t see each other nearly as often as we’d like. But in some weird way, I think that’s one of the special things about our friendship. I don’t need to see them…

A Warning for All Moms Out There
By the time you have your third child, it’s generally understood that you have a pretty decent handle on what to expect. (Did I hear someone laugh out there?) I know that each child presents his or her own challenges. You’ll always learn new things with each kid, but when my youngest was an infant, I learned something that completely shocked me and the lesson continues to resonate with me. Yesterday, a good friend Organized SAHM, posted a picture on her Facebook page of baby toes. It wasn’t a picture of the cute little adorable toes that we are obligated to kiss and tickle and play with. (The picture just…

Bullying Part Two: The School’s Responsibility
Recently, I posted an article about bullying. I asked if it had changed or if we, as a society, had changed. I think that this is a really complex answer and I don’t believe that it can be addressed with any measure of value in a series of blog entries. Still, this is my platform and bullying hurts my heart in a personal way, so this is my attempt. My family has dealt with severe and powerful bullying on more than one occasion. A few years ago, a little girl at my daughter’s school decided that she didn’t like my daughter. It happens all the time and unfortunately, it’s something…

Bullying: Has it changed or have we?
Recently bullying has been in the news a lot. After having a daughter who was literally bullied out of school and a friend whose son made national headlines for his cry for help from bullying, I’m sure you can imagine this is a topic that touches my heart with intensity. When a young, unmarried friend of mine who has no children asked on social media what all the uproar was about, it created a firestorm. Obviously there are some very strong opinions on bullying. This may surprise you, but the opinions vary pretty drastically. I see both sides of the issue. I believe that our society has ‘politically corrected’ so…
